Ever wondered what it’s like to try an Olympic sport?

Scouts Canada, supported by the ONTarget Rifle and Pistol Alliance and funded by the Ontario Ministry of Sport, is launching an exciting pilot program that introduces Scouters and Scouts to Olympic-style airgun marksmanship.

Canada has a proud history of Olympic success in the shooting sports, and this program offers a safe, structured, and accessible way to experience that tradition. Participants will train with target-class .177 air rifles and air pistols, precision equipment far more advanced than typical recreational pellet guns. Best of all, the airguns, pellets, and targets will be provided at no cost to participating groups, under qualified supervision.

The pilot begins with online learning that introduces the sport and emphasizes safe, responsible equipment handling. Scouters then progress to in-person instruction at Camp Samac, covering range operations and foundational marksmanship skills. The program culminates in hands-on practical sessions, where Scouter instructors receive direct coaching while working with their Scouts. Following the pilot, Scouts Canada will explore opportunities to expand the program provincially, and ultimately, nationally.

Instruction is led by Patrick Haynes, a nationally and internationally certified pistol coach with more than 35 years of experience. His career highlights include serving as Canadian National Pistol Coach, Canadian Armed Forces CISM Pistol Coach, and Canadian Pistol Coach for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

If you’re interested in participating, please contact Glenn Bryers at [email protected].  We are especially eager to hear from Scouters with prior ISSF target shooting experience, in either rifle or pistol.

Join us in introducing Scouts to a sport that builds focus, discipline, safety awareness, and confidence, while connecting them to Canada’s Olympic heritage.
